George Orwell (1903-1950), British writer, whose original name was Eric Arthur Blair, was a policeman in Burma. Later in his life, he worked as a journalist in England and fought in the civil war in Spain. He wrote many essays and novels. He is regarded as one of the most important authors of the 20th century with his dystopias Animal Farm and 1984.
