Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849), was an American writer, poet, critic and editor best known for evocative short stories and poems. The Murders in the Rue Morgue gave birth to the modern detective story. Poe’s death remains one of American literature’s great unsolved mysteries. He died in Baltimore, Maryland, USA on October 7, 1849.
